Dress Code for Interview - A Candidate's Guide

By Mark McIntosh

You only get one chance to make a great first impression. The clothes you wear to a job interview are a big part of the first impression you make to a potential employer. Because many hiring managers make up their minds in the first minute of the interview, it is imperative that you prepare to dress for success.

Although appearances matter more in some companies more than others, it is always best to overdress and err on the side of conservatism. Casual Fridays never apply when interviewing! In general, dress at least one level above the way you would dress if you were going to work at that company.

There are many books and articles on this subject, but here are a few simple guidelines to help.

Men's Interview Attire
- Solid color, conservative neatly pressed suit
- White, cream or light blue long sleeve dress shirt neatly pressed with a conservative tie
- Dark socks, dress shoes that match the belt
- Limited jewelry & accessories
- Professional hairstyle
- No cologne
- Neatly trimmed nails

Women's Interview Attire
- Solid color, conservative neatly pressed suit
- Coordinated blouse & shoes
- Limited jewelry, make-up & perfume
- Professional hairstyle
- Tan or light hosiery
- Manicured nails

You will want to make sure you try on all your clothes the day before the interview to make sure everything fits well and there are no stains on or tears in your clothes.

Again, you only get one chance to make a first impression. Make it a great one!
